This week, a colleague worked from home for a day. His commute is 90 minutes each way and he had an afternoon dentist appointment. He was at his computer chatting with the team, putting out e-mails, and generally doing his job. He and I have done this before for various reasons. We've both left early due to weather, skipped coming to the office altogether due to weather and/or travel. It didn't seem like a big issue...until he got called into the boss's office today.

God Bless America and our Presidents. Without either, I would not have had a three day weekend and the amount of time required to tackle a few home renovation projects. My wife and I really maximized the three day weekend by tackling the long awaited flooring project. We didn't finish all 1,000 square feet, but did get our master bedroom 95% complete. It's nice to be away from the dust and powder of subfloor (we tore out the stained/gross carpet when we moved in).

As part of my goal of achieving $5,000 of dividends this year, I need to replace some of my non-dividend paying holdings with dividend payers. I held a few larger positions in companies that I bought at low prices that have increased quite a bit in value. Not only did the size of the holdings as a percentage of my portfolio get too high for my comfort, owning large quantities of these stocks did not help get me to my goal.

I always used to tell people that I'd be a millionaire by 25. I said it often enough and with enough conviction that people still remember that. They jokingly ask what the hold up is (I'm not yet a millionaire). As I got older and began to comprehend how hard it is to make a million dollars (much less by age 25), I shifted my catch-phrase to "I'm going to retire by 35". After each successive year of working, my target retirement age moved closer and closer - 33...30....and my latest saying is that I'll retire by 27 this coming August.
